Become A Foster Parent

Open Your Heart & Home

Hundreds of children in our community have suffered abuse, neglect, and abandonment and been removed from their biological families. These youth have entered the foster care system through no fault of their own, but because they have experienced trauma. There is an urgent need for compassionate foster parents in Volusia, Flagler, and Putnam Counties to provide a place of refuge for these kids.

Foster parents give a caring, temporary home for a child, teen, or group of siblings until they can be safely reunited with their biological families – or move on to another permanent living arrangement such as adoption. By providing care when children need it most, foster parents can truly make a difference for a lifetime in a relatively short time.

There are many myths about who can be a foster parent, but the basic requirements are straightforward. Florida foster parents must:

  • Be a Florida resident aged 21 and older;
  • Be financially stable (able to pay your bills and meet financial emergencies);
  • Be able to care for children;
  • Pass an extensive background check and complete a home study and training; (See our Licensing Process page for more information.)
  • Have reliable and safe transportation; and
  • Have adequate room and beds in your home for children.
  • Upon successful completion of these steps, you will be issued a foster care license through the State of Florida. You are now ready to make a life-changing impact on the children and families in our community!

The most important requirement to be a foster parent is love. Many foster parents say fostering is their calling. Like most worthwhile pursuits, foster parenting can be challenging, but it is also deeply rewarding and a tremendous opportunity to be of service to children in your community.
